Can't do it....unless you hit it and contact the GW to see about taking the deer......if memory serves me correctly..
Spend time with the ones you love. Time is not guaranteed.

Yep, it is illegal but I have known many people who will and do. In fact, I would if I thought that I could get away with it but with my luck, I would get caught!!!
I avoid Dick's and hope they fold.

It is against the law to:
possess a deer or any part of a deer that has been hit by a motor vehicle.
That is directly from the TP&W website and can be found on page 61 of the Outdoor Annual.

If more folks would try that they might get the horns. I have even heard of GW's giving folks fresh hit deer if it was called in. I wouldn't count on either happening, but you never know if you don't try.

One of my friends hit a deer and called the game warden, the warden asked if he wanted the deer to eat since it was fresh killed and he said sure. The GW proceded to field dress the deer and put it in the truck for him and said have a nice night.

I have heard of the game warden giving some one the deer but not field dressing for them
Never been to a camping world. I prefer Dick's to be honest.

you can not take the horns off the deer. I have heard that if you hit the deer you can call the GW and tell him and he will tell you if you can take it or not but if you take if you have to tag it.

If the GW gives you the deer he will fill out a road kill tag to put on it, you do not have to use your tag..

I talked to the Regional Commander from Parks & Wildlife FTW office and he said they will tag it for you if you call it in.

Who would want the horns you do not get the thrill of shooting and cleaning and having that experience. You just drive by and see big horns who cares what are you going to do with them, there is NO story to go along with that. But yes it is illegal to take them
If I put my wife in a high fence will her rack get bigger?

Some people that don't even hunt will stop and cut the horns off of a road kill deer, just so they can use them for decoration. Plus you have to think of all the things that people make out of deer antlers. Pens, knives, hat racks, lamps, etc. Just because the thrill of the kill wasn't theirs, won't stop some people from cutting antlers off of road kill bucks, just to get extra material to make the stuff they sell. I don't know why its illegal to cut the antlers off of a dead buck on the side of the road, especially when the antlers is something that you can sell after the kill anyways. My problem is that I never have a hacksaw in the truck when I need one, plus my luck I WOULD GET CAUGHT!!!

To Keep People From Running Over Them On Purpose!!!
Hitting a deer with a vehicle is not technically considered poaching, until they catch a person purposely trying to hit the deer, and that does happen occasionally.

I once came across a nice 10 pt. buck laying in the middle of the road at 4 a.m. I was headed out to my lease. When I drove by he lifted his head .I was like "Oh sh*t, hes still alive". Turned around ,stopped on the side of the road, and drug him over in front of the head lights. His back legs were gone (didnt look for them) but for the most part he had stopped bleeding and was just there.I talked to him a little, petted him, then pulled out my trusty Kershaw and sliced his neck. ( not sure of the legalities of this) He didnt make a sound and I stayed there with him for a good 10 minutes 'till he "gave up the ghost" so-to-speak. Didnt take the horns...but I did say to myself if he is still there when I drive by later that night, and traffic is light, I was going to grab the horns. BUt he was gone...somebody else got him. But I think, or so it seems, almost everyone would consider it.I guess depending on where your at or the size of the horns. Now lets say you run across a ...... 18 point whitetail monster ?? what do you do ??? other then take pictures ?? And remember we're just talking horns here. The road kill could be months old or days old....its still road kill.

The folks that made part of their living hitting deer with a vehicle weren't doing it in a way that was gonna injure their vehicle.
Like anything else, folks that are in the business are not driving $30,000 Pick-ups.
They are driving older vehicles wit front grill guards and bumpers that make the Ranch Hand grills and bumpers look like tinker toys.
Also they are not driving the roads at 60 or 70 miles an hour, they are crusing along at 30 to 40 miles an hour and when they get a deer lined up the way they want it, they just speed up enough to hit it.
This is that side of hunting, that depending on your age and where you were raised up at, either never dealt with it, or have no working knowledge of.
True poachers, especially the older guys that did it before horns became so valuable, had many unique ways of killing deer, and in many cases doing it for decades and never getting caught.
Hitting deer with vehicles down in the hill country especially used to almost be a sport unto itsself.

I had this issue come up with a game warden in person. We were at a buddy of mines ranch in Young cty and we were driving down the road next to it and noticed a buck that had been hit. We stopped and looked at it and it was a young buck with some potential of making a 180 or 190 set of antlers when it would have been mature. So we pick the deer up and are taking it back to his ranch to through it in his dump, just to get it off the road. Well about a hour later the game warden comes knocking on the door telling he had seen us take the buck and bring it back to his house. He was really nice about it and just told us to call him first so he knows what we are doing. He let us keep the antler( it only had one side/ with 9 points). All of this happened after dark and had know idea how he know we did it. He told us he was wathcing some spot lighters and had seen us stop and pick it up. That was definetly pretty crazy, but he let me play around with his night vision binoc's. Those are some seriously smart people!
