Walked outside to take a piss, been hearing yotes lately so I brought a flashlight out and shined around. Spotted one aprox 125 yds away ran inside grabbed my savage 93r17btvs leaned up on the fence and hit it in the shoulder, it wimpered and stumbled and limped off, I whistled, got it to stop again, this time about 150 yds away, shot again and another hit to the shoulder/chest area, I could hear it. He fell down, got back up and limped through the fence and over the highway before I could get off another shot. I used to think this caliber could take on anything, i've done it many times but here lately its proved otherwise. Time to buy another
204 i guess...

i own a 17, and I know what it is and what it isnt.
a 17 gr pill at 2500 fps is nothing more than a pellet gun on steroids

I use my .17HMR on yotes around my house where I really don't want to be throwing any more lead, but it is not a cartridge I would pick to hunt them with for sure. Does great with skunks though, and head shots on nice oven sized shoats. grin

Fine for squirrels, coons and the like. I don't have much faith in them for anything larger. I shot a 'yote with mine at less than 50 yards and he just jumped and ran off.

I agree. .22 Mag hits much harder than a .17HMR.

Problem is that the .22 mags are getting harder to find. Everybody has gone to selling the carp out of .17's.

i prefer the 22 hornet, but thats me, to me it fits the bill of a small caliber hot rod, way more umph than the 17 or 22 mag but still small, and slightly quiet.

With the low cost and availability decent .223 ammo I don't really see the point in the .17 anyway...

If you want a 17 that is great for killing Yotes out to 300 yards get a 17 Remington, 200 yards try the 17 fireball. The 17 Hornet has been brought out by Hornady and should also work at up to 200 or perhaps 150 is better for it ans it runs I think a 20gr pill at over 1000fpa faster then the HMR and all 3 of those are reloadable

What grain were you using? What type of bullet? If it were me, I would be using the heavier 20gr hollow point rather than a 17gr ballistic tip.

Trade it for a 22 magnum to someone who just has to have the .17 HMR. You will win on that trade.. cool

so glad to see so many knocking the hummer, bought one right after they came out and found out it was junk when it would not shoot through blades of grass to get to the target. Switched to a 22mag for the rimfire and could not be happier.

My favorite higher powered rimfire is the 5mm Remington, Glad ammo is available again for it.

I have one but I do not try coyotes with it.

Just because it doesnt always knock down a yote at 150 doesnt mean its junk. It has its purpose dont shoot it for what its not good for. Its always the guns fault when it doesnt perform, sometimes its target selection.

+1....the 17 HMR is not meant to be a Coyote gun. But it is probably the best damn squirrel/rabbit/coon/possum gun in the world.
