Flint was to lead the attack with his 223 by taking the first shot on the biggest boar. Then we planned to take out the 200 to 250 pounders next and work our way down until they made it to cover.




I don’t know if he hit his target, but it didn’t matter. It was a DECOY!!! At the crack of the shot, every hog in the field turned and charged in unison. I’ve been charged before, but not by 50 at once. Flint might as well have been throwing twinkies. Not only did nothing on his side drop, they seemed to run faster! When his 100 round drum dried up, he dropped the rifle and took off. I yelled “Run Forrest Run” over my shoulder and then dug in. If they were going to get me, I was going to take as many with me as I could. Settling into my routine, I started dealing out the ammo.




They may have masterfully orchestrated their assault, but they didn’t know when I get thrown in with the lions, I get hungrier. Hog after hog somersaulted until the hogs bringing up the rear began tripping over their fallen comrades. Seeing their friends and family repeatedly shot in the face must have finally got to them. Just as I fired the last shot, they decided they had enough and veered off. All but one that is.

A particularly large boar held back until I was out of ammo and rushed in. At a mere few feet away, he dove for my throat and I had to grab his front hooves and slam him to the ground, breaking his neck.

Just curious... How many rounds do you go through a night/month/year? The comment about Flint running the drum dry got me thinking.

I try to take at least 5 boxes on a hunt. I've run out with 3 boxes before and I don't want to do that again. If I run out with 5 boxes, I ought to be able to go home with no complaints.

I went through about 80 rounds last night. I think Flint said he was over 90. We're not bad shots, but in open fields, sometimes these hogs spook before you get in range and you just have to take whatever shots you get.

One section of wheat had two herds in it. However wind, boundaries and other factors only allowed us to approach from a direction where they were stretched out away from us instead of side to side. There may be over 50 hogs out there, but we may only get realistic shots at a few. Still, that doesn't keep me from trying!!!

I also shot about that much last Wed night when I got 13. They're posted in the hog section ( LINK ). As I mentioned over there, I took 5 boxes and would have shot all of them if conditions had been more favorable. I got busted on two stalks by shifting winds and once they just spotted me.

I don't want to start a controversy, but YES hogs have spotted me at night from several hundred yards away, and NO they didn't smell or hear me and NO I don't need a lesson on stalking from the diehards.

Not to worry D. Jones I don't think anyone on here will question your ability to smoke pigs. Proofs in tha pics.
