Good area. Just be real careful on trying to hunt too many folks on the property. You need a lot of land per hunter up there because of the deer density and hunting pressure.

Hunted the area my whole life. The deer are still good, but quality is going down. Too many hunters taking too many 140-150 deer now days. It will soon go the way of the Albany area. Once a place gets known, its over.

Its sad. I am looking for new uncharted land now. Trophy hunting is best in areas that are just getting established and before they get inundated with hunters.

Absolutely! Guys have come up there and just shot the hell out of the three and four year olds because they havent seen 130 to 150 inch buck before and the herd has gone significantly down hill!

Preach it brother. I sat and counted 8 towers within sight of my stand last December. When I put that thing up in the early 90's There was not another stand on our place or in the surrounding areas. I didnt see another tower until 01 and then the floodgates opened.

Yep in 97 when I started hunting up there never saw another stand, now I see em on every piece a dirt in the area, if guys had self contol it wouldn't matter but that will never be the case a young buck with a solid rack steps out and they can't help themselves, then they come in to the taxidermy shop bragging bout what a trophy hunter they are rofl fun to watch their face when they figure out they just just shot a three ur old buck bang

Waaaay too many hunters in the area.

Idiots try to hunt it like the hill country - shooting out everything and stands every 500-600 yards. We drive by a pasture going to one of our places that we leased in the past and gave up on several years ago that is slightly less than a section of land.

When the "new" hunters invaded that property two years ago they put up 7 stands on that property and had the hunters to fill the stands - are you kidding me ! Totally ridiculous. That section was good for one trophy every other year - at best. Totally ruined the place. I blame both the landownder as much as the hunters in that situation.

Our landowner is good we only take one or two a gear off 4000k acres and are very particular, and have had years where we shot none, and he has 8k more acres on side for himself and the other side is surrounded by 16k highly managed or we wouldn't have deer, if your gonna hunt the panhandle you need to be patient and prepared to not shoot it is not the area for guys he think I paid I am shooting! And really burns my arse when they shoot a ten that scores 130 and they passed an 8 that scored 140 and was mature, I see it all the time in my buddies taxidermy shop, we sit around all the time laughing at some of the bs stories it is cheap entertainment.

thats what we are there for is a true trophy not 130- 145 3 year old. hopefully we will find some. what about mule deer in that area are they just few and far between. well all stands are up, corn feeders running, and all the protien they can stand. we saw a few deer but it was the middle of the day and we were trying to be quite.

Guys this is my first year to hunt in Childress. Been feading since first of April or at least until the wind emptied all my feeders. have camera's up and are seeing good deer numbers. Even have mule deer coming to corn which is odd as we hunt in Sanderson and they will not come to corn there. I am one of the guys you are talking about that has never seen a 140 or 150 so i am trying to do everything i can to know each deer on camera to judge correctly when the time comes. Mostly there for my kids. Was very surprised on the amount of hogs up there. They are everywhere. We have shot 10 or so in 3 short trips up there. Any advice you guys can give on the area would be greatly appreciated. i took the do not shoot babies to heart. Thanks

If they find a feeder the will wear it out and it's worse with protein feeders!

I have always been amazed that people say mulies wont come into feeders. They wear mine in the panhandle and SW KS out!
