Yes, But It Is!!!!!!!!!!
Firearms: Game animals and game birds may be hunted with any legal firearm, EXCEPT:
White-tailed deer, mule deer, desert bighorn sheep, and pronghorn antelope may NOT be hunted with rimfire ammunition of any caliber. Shotguns are the only legal firearm that may be used to hunt Eastern turkey during the spring Eastern turkey season (see County Listing). Rifles and handguns may not be used to hunt Eastern turkey.
Pellet guns and other air guns are NOT LEGAL. Fully automatic firearms are NOT LEGAL. Firearms equipped with silencers or sound-suppressing devices are NOT LEGAL. A shotgun is the only legal firearm for hunting migratory game birds and lesser prairie chicken (see Definitions - Legal Shotgun).
The above is copied directly from the TP&W website.
The same information can be found on page 54 of the 2007-2008 Outdoor Annual under the heading Means and Methods.
Since all I ever hunt is the Rio Grande wild turkey, it is perfectly legal.
Care to argue with TP&W???????????

This is slightly off topic, but applies to responding to posts on the forum.
Over the time I have been on here, and I am not the only person that has noticed this or has brought this up.
When someone posts or responds to something and a person wants to reply to that person, TAKE TIME TO GO BACK TO THAT RESPONSE, and click on the reply window on that response.
The problem occurs when a person is reading responses, sees one that they wish to reply to, and instead of clicking on reply at that particular post/response, they drop down to the last response on the page, hit reply and send their comments.
When that happens, the respose that is replied to, may be so far off what the person making the new response is talking about, that when the person that had made that last post looks back at the thread, they do not understand why they were responded to in that manner.
One of the things I like best about the THF, is that you can go back and reply to the individual that you wish to, not just reply to the last response made and hope everyone knows what is going on.
If members will just take the time to make sure they are actually responding to the person they want to, it does reduce the problems.

So Let's go back just to make sure Eastern Turkey - Shotgun only Rio Grande Turkey (I guess since they don't migrate they aren't considered migratory) The regs do not specify that a rimfire is not allowed, and does not say that it is. I would say from a legal standpoint you would be covered because of omission. I might want to get a clarification on that one before I actually tried to pull it off. Just one of those CYA things

If it is NOT listed as being Illegal/Not Legal, that means it is legal. This isn't one of those "Gray Area" rules.

I hear ya Crazy horse I speak from my personal experience on this. I personally have Irish luck. If I were to do it there would be something in fine print hidden somewhere. As for ME I would want written permission from a game warden, that was witnessed and notarized in front of a judge and congress. But thats just me, Yall go right on ahead

There is a tinge of humor with some truth stirred in. I understand what is written. I'm just one of those lucky types of people. Even with the best of intentions and trying to behave I will get tagged for some minor /major infraction of some little known statute or rule. So you understand it's just a personal thing. I don't think I would be bold and try it out right off the bat.

You might want to just stay at home then, but they could still kick in your door.

On a little more serious note--- Since I have been assured it is legal to take a Rio gobbler with a rimfire. Here is a twist on this question. Who out there has one of the new .17 HMR, that has shot it enough to comment on whether in their opinion it would have enough grunt to take a gobbler and at what range? I have had my eye on a nice Savage rifle with the thumbhole stock. Getting it for a turkey shoot might be a good enough excuse to justify it's purchase

My parents hunt a bunch out in west texas for Rio Grande turkeys and they use .17 caliber's when hunting out of a box blind. Never had one fly away. When they are on the ground and don't have as good of a rest, they use shotguns.
Might start with J_Dub, he posted this.

Yeah I saw that. I didn't read it close enough, rather I should say that I took it to mean centerfire .17. After close inspection I see my error in assuming. So J-dub, care to comment? I really wanna know!
