Anybody been seeing any bucks that survived the new e.tx antler restrictions? I saw one at the feeder that might exceed the minimum last week wich will be nice considering i never got one last year at my place! Need to get my daughter one this year, its hard when she has to pass up bucks because there not wide enough.

Only one kilt on our lease in Cass County last year. There were a lot of deer seen but everyone was scared to shoot. Plus on our lease it's not like ya have a lot of time to measure them up in the brush. Hopefully this coming season we will be able to tell. There has to be more deer since less were killed right?
It ain't easy being me.

In east Texas? Uhhhh NO! Can you calculate how many were killed with a .22 by road hunters at night? The population of good deer in e. Texas will still be slim to none...unfortunately again this year.

I live in hopkins co. and i leave at 4.30 am and come home after dark but have never seen anybody that looked like they were trying to snipe any deer but that dont mean it aint happening. I know my neighbors didnt kill any bucks last year and my father-in-law took a spike for meat but no forked horn or bigger were takin. Saw one deer last year that might have been legal but like big daddy was afraid to shoot and he didnt stick around long enough to find out!

the thing that most people don't want to admit is, that antler restrictitons work, but they bave a hard time keeping their fingers off the trigger for a year or two.
a buddy who has property in colorado counties ( one of the original AR counties) hated them till he started killing bigger deer than those 50 in 6 points. now there are MORE deer. it just takes a little while to see results
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Hoytman,..i took a nice seven point last year. I'll have to admit that if he had been walking broadside, that it would have been extremely difficult to judge him. The fact that he was walking toward me the whole time, gave me ample time to judge him correctly & take the shot.

Yep, everyone in E Tex must be a road hunting slack jawed poacher. I read it once on an internet forum so it must be true.
In 2005 prior to antler restrictions we took four deer off our place. 2 bucks over 13 inches, 1 under (hunters first deer) and a doe. A few bucks were passed up early in the year.
In 2006, our first year of antler restrictions, we took four deer off our place. 1 buck over 13 inches, 2 spikes, and a doe. Many bucks were passed up because they were too close to call.
In both years we would have taken more does but our doe days fell when we could not dedicate a lot of time to hunting.
So far this year we have spotted 5 bucks over 13 inches, 2 of which are hosses.

There would be a whole lot of hunters in East Texas that would say you're wrong on that statement, and I for one would say it. No, hunting in East Texas is not like the Hill Country, South or West Texas and/or the Panhandle. There are plenty of good mature bucks there, you just have to do your scouting and devise a plan or two in order to get one. I've hunted there too long to know there's plenty, but most folks that try their hand at hunting there, give up or say there isn't any for one reason or another. The antler restrictions do work and it will be a couple 2-3 years of letting those younger bucks a chance to walk instead of squeezing on them just because you see antlers.

LMAO! Got another one to bite. It's almost too easy when talking about east Texas hunting. Billy Bob and JoeBill will come running to defend it like you were talkin' bout they Mama! Guess I would too if I had no quail, turkey, or deer to speak of. Good hog hunting though!

And we wonder why so many people are turning away from hunting in favor of other pursuits. Even within our own ranks we have internet forum hero's who would rather belittle others rather than answer a question that was posted in an effort to become educated.

I happen to live in east texas.I hunt here and in west texas. Most of the properties I have hunted here at home HAVE been poached hard. Not at night but by people buying every one in there household a lisence or just not tagging a deer and slipping it out and to the house.I have worked with alot of guys that have lost there tags and gone down and gotten another one or there son, daughter and wife have all shot bucks.I hope all the leagle hunters over here would help the wardons out.It would sure help the deer herd.

i agree, you've got to be a pretty weak person to stop doing something you like just because somebody else bellittles you. if txcornhusker dosen't like the way we spotlight our yearling bucks, he can kiss off

Im not sure if im being called stupid or a poacher or both or what but i really dont care! I love my little 47 acre ranch! I hunt in west texas too and will be the first to agree there are more deer but i wouldnt give $5 dollars an acre for the land out there. But i hear its good for deer, steers and queers or so i have been told! But im pretty sure there are some good people out there just like us e. texas bumpkins!

There is plenty of poaching going on. Over a 20 yr period of scouting, hiking and messing around on family owned property in Tyler county I have found plenty of evidence of a deer being brought in from the road by the 22cal method. We are not up there full time so there is no way to stop it but it dang sure iritates me.
Everyone has a photographic memory. Some just don't have film.

ok here i go settin myself for a beating again, BUT,, and stay with me here, west tx, no trees, wide open areas, wide racks, east tx, lots of trees, heavy brush and undergrowth, narrow racks, anyone else ever seen or heard about the minature elephants they found on an island because they adapted to their environment?? chance perhaps?? I cant be the only one that has come to this realization, Oh wait, i didnt thin about the west tx guys being of higher intellegance.... inteliganse........havin more smarts than us east tx fellers, and havin more better cents than takin that shot outta season..............NEVER happened out there Happens everywhere, period, AND with not being able to shoot a questionable deer, but u can shoot a spike, how is that spike gonna live long enough to become a monster?? gotta admit, i shot a 8 pt last year in east tx, prossessor said it was 4.5 to 5 yrs old, 12.5 spread, wasnt gonna get any wider, and .5 inch is hard to tell at 117 yrds when they dont give u "THE POSE", alright feed me to the hogs

The were very few sub 13" wide deer that survived rifle season in the area that I hunt. Maybe this year people will do a better job of letting the sub 13 inchers go.

Redneck, most hunters worth their salt should know the difference between a 4.5 year old deer and a yearling.
if i were saw you do that, nothing would be said or reported, but the vast majority of folks shoot those deer where they have their first set of horns
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.
