Have a Taurus 24/7 Pro compact in .40. Really like the size and caliber of gun, but it's a double action only which I really dislike. And it's got a LONG pull. Don't want another double action only. What would you guys suggest for carry that's less than $500 new/used that is compact? Not a Glock fan, sorry. Want to stay with a .40 or .45. Thanks.

I no longer carry automatics.....due to potential reliability issues. I suggest looking at the variety of J-frame revolvers Smith & Wesson offers. I carry the model M&P 360 and I could not be happier. Good luck.....

If you like the Taurus, get it in the DA/SA option instead. Or maybe the M&P40c?

One gun that I had and really liked was a Kahr CW series. You can get it in 40 or 45. It is a very slim gun that is easy to carry. Shot great. You can get a smaller version as well, but I liked the full grip of the cw.

How about an FN - FNP in 40 or 45cal... Sig 250, 239, 229 I too have been looking at some S&W model 65-3" rb, model 66 2.5" My N-frame model 27 is heavy and pulls my pants down I have a Sig 239 in 9mm and a Bersa Thunder 380, both shoot great. 9mm +P+ has almost the same thump as a 357 Sig.

You might try some of the newer, lighter 1911's out there. They are pricier than the polymer guns, but will outlive you. If you want 9mm, I'd look at Browning Hi-Powers. It's hard to find many compact 9mm/.40 that aren't DAO.
I have a Sig P232 which can be fired SA or DA but it's nearly the cost of a 1911 now.

The CZ Po7 would be a good choice. Of course I'm a Glock guy so I shouldn't comment.

CZ 75 Compact. A highly underrated carry pistol, same basic size as the Glock 19. DA/SA, built like a tank, and without a doubt the most ergonomic pistol that I have ever carried. Comes in 9 or 40, alloy or steel, with or without a rail, and with a decocker if you so choose. You can get them at Buds right now for $430...

As an update, there have been widespread reports of failures to feed with the .40 compacts. Apparently the geometry of the feed ramp simply doesn't like the .40. I have found no reliability issues with the 9mm compacts, so that would probably be the safest bet.

Then I shot one and now that's my carry gun. If you haven't handled and shot one, try it before you rule it out, especially in that $500 range. I don't think you can beat it unless you spend a lot more money, and then you can only match it.

I really want the CZ PCR. It's basically the compact with an alloy frame. The most ergo friendly pistol for me.

Yes I'm referring to the CZ. Something about the compact platform just does not like the .40 cal.
I really do like the way the CZ feels. They carry them at Academy, put a hand on one the next time you're in there. It's surprising how ergonomic they are. Only thing I don't like is the trigger reach in DA mode, but I can live with it...

at the risk of sounding like a "Glock elitist", I totally agree with Gumbeaux.

I echo this sentiment as well, no so much because of reliablitiy, but more for simplicity and concealment is better for my body type, and clothes worn in the warmer months.

I almost always carry a Tarus Ultralight in .38 +P. It is light and has enough punch to satisfy me. I like it.

any of the spring xd's would do you good. given most guns are built around the same style, and not sure why you are not a glock fan, xd would get my vote.
im not a fan of revolvers for my daily carry, i know most civilians wont get into a several shot gun fight, but id rather not have to fumble loading a revolver (just my .02s)
