I would like to find the heaviest bullet that is suitable for deer hunting in .224 cal.

So far I've gathered that Speer makes a 70 grain. Does anyone make a Soft Point that is heavier?

The plan is for my son to start hunting with this gun but I want something heavier than a 55gr. for those heart shots.

I would recoment a 60 grain nosler partition, not 70 greans, but a much better bullet in my opinion. Also look at the tsx lineup of bullets, many on here use them with good results. You are going to have to watch out on your twist rate in the barrel to stabalize the longer heavier bullets.

Personaly I have shot the partitions alot, killed sever deer and hogs with them, full penetration on everything I have shot with them and not a singel complaint.

I do have some 60 grain Hornady SPs. Not much heavier than the 55 gr SPs I know.

Do you think there would be a significant difference between the 60 gr. Hornadys and the Noslers?

Barnes has a 70 grain TSX in .224. My rifle is a Remington 700 1/14" twist I beleive.

Do y'all think these would work out okay?

My loading manual said that A Speer 70 gr. would go almost 3100 fps. I Imagine the 70 gr. Barnes should be similar.

A 1:14 twist may stablize a 60 gr. bullet in your 700, possibly a 64 gr. Power Point, but no larger. I had a 700 22-250 that shot 60 gr. Partitions great. The 53 gr. or 55 gr. TSX's will and do work just fine on Texas whitetails.

Thanks. I think I'm gonna try a box of 55gr. TSXs. Probably try it out on a couple of does and pigs.

Go with either the 60 grain partition or the Barnes TSX's. I have used several different bullets in the 22-250 over the years for deer and have friends that use them also.

Stay away from the 60gr hornadys this bullet has a very thin jacket. A friend and tried them years ago and the results were fist sized wounds about 2 inches deep. One waw a shoulder shot at about 80 uards the other was a neck shot at about 30 yards. Neither shot broke bone. The neck shot one went over 1/4 mile with a fair blood trail the shoulder shot was followed up with a shot to the back of he head. Neither one of us has used that bullet since.

The 70gr Speer works well on deer, I was able to get it to stabilize with a max load in a 1-14 inch barrel, but it is no better of as food as the 60gr partition for deer.

If you had a fast twist barrel I would suggest the Swift Surocco 75 gr bonded core hogh ballistic coefficient bullet that has impressed me so far, Buck at 10 yards and hog at about 200 yards, massive internal damage and half dollar sized exit wounds

Man I wish I could shoot heavier bullets out of my 223, but that 1:14 twist just wont do it.

My dad's old Sako has a 1 in 14 and it shoots 63g Sierra SPs extremely accurate and has killed a TON of deer and hogs

My load for it is a max charge of Varget

If you go with a deer bullet I would try the partition

Personally like the vmax on deer, it makes a mess

How do you know what the twist rate of the barrel is? I have a Howa 1500 .22-250 with a heavy barrel.

I believe Howa has a 1 in 14" twist, same as Vanguards.

For checking twist rate mark your cleaning rod with a straight line down the legnth of it, ising a tight fitting patch that will make the rod turn with the rifling. mark a starting point on the rod, push it through alowing until the rod makes a full turn, mark the rod in the same relationship as the first mark.
The distance between the marks is the number of inches for 1 turn. If 12 inches between the marks you have a 1-12 twist rate.

Go the rifle manufacturers web sight and look up the model#.
Email or call them.

60 grain Nosler partition for deer sized game IMO.
Most 1:14's will shoot a good recipe hand load 60grn.

Is there any factory ammo that uses the 55g tsx in the 22-250

I think you will find the 22-250 factory loads will most likely use the 53 gr Barnes TSX bullets, for a 1 in 14 twist barrel the all copper bullets might be getting a little long. Federal and Barnes both load them commercially. I tried some of the Barnes 55gr 223 Remington TSX loads last weekend at the range and shot a 3/8 inch group out of my CZ 527. might have to hunt with it sometime this year
