Let's hear about some of your experiences in terms of how close you can get to them before they detect you...

see - Not so well. Though if they are pressured any changes using light even red or green they will notice. I've noticed using infrared lights at 20 yards they notice something but usually don't run off.
smell - I think its standard as other animals like other animals if they wiff you they're gone. A lot of folks hand throw corn prior to hog hunts, if they're snouts were that powerful they'd scent us pretty quickly.
hear - If they are running solo (usually boar hogs) there hearing is top notch. If there is a group of hogs keep as silent as possible until they start feeding. Once they get on feed they make so much frickin noise chewing on corn and chasing one another off you could walk right up on them to about 30-20 yards.

A hogs nose is its best defense.
A hog can smell a grub worm buried 5 inches in the dirt, root acorns that are buried under the leaves.
As stated, when multiple hogs are feeding, you can practically walk right up on them making pistols a viable option for night hunting.

Their nose is their number one defense by far

I know from personal experience that at 50 feet they can't tell what you are as long as you don't move and are down wind.

Old ranchers have told me they can smell johnson grass roots 3 feet under ground and 6 feet across. Thats why some rooting is so big. Smelling-#1. Hearing- not top notch #2. Sight- flat out sucks. Ive walked within 15 yards of them and they had no idea.

I have been bow hunting on more than one occassion with deer directly down wind at less than 10 yards without getting scent busted only to have a pig cross my wind much further out and pick up on me immediately. Their sence of smell is 2nd to none. Their hearing is pretty good. This is evident when you see an old boar alone. In a group, they make so much noise that it's not a factor in their defense. Their eyesight is bad beyond 10-15 yards.

I would agree. Smell seems to be it. I was just walking in the woods and a couple hogs stood up. Looked at me and just stared. I just froze. Then the wind swirled behind me and only then did they take off.

Im going to say their sense of smell. I was hunting a bow only ranch in Llano, i was running late getting into the stand one aftrenoon, didnt put my rubber boots on, had 2 hogs come in from behind and cross the trail i used to get to my stand, i was watching them come in the entire time, soon as they hit my trail, both of them stopped, whrilled around and hauled it out of there. They didnt smell me in the stand, due to the wind was in my favor, had to be the scent i left on the trail.
In these times , 'I'll keep my God , my freedom , my gun and my money. Anyone that supports this insanity can keep "THE CHANGE".

The see just fine, hear very well, and smell great. Anyone who thinks they can't hear and see well hasn't done enough hog hunting. Javelina's eyesight is another matter...........

I think they can see just fine, but they don't pay a bit of attention when feeding. When they are feeding, you can walk within 10 yards of them.
