Now booking sandhill crane hunts for 2010-2011 season. All hunts conducted over mounted sandhill crane decoys. If you have never hunted sandhill crane over decoys you need to try it. www.fowlplayoutfitters.com

Do you eat Sand Hill Crane or is hunting them just for sport? If you eat them are they good?
If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.

Sandhills are great, breast them out and cut the breast meat across the grain into slices 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. You can either bread and fry them or one of my favorites is to use Shake and Bake for chicken and just cook them in the oven.

Sandhills are like the prime rib of the sky. I haven't had one of those since I was a kid. We used to see them down here a lot but I can't remember the last time I saw one.

We've got about 3000 that roost on the big lake at the ranch and close to 30,000 that roost on the big salt lakes west of town. Nobody called or decoyed them back when we were hunting them, we just hunted certain flyways depending on the wind. The more wind the better and set up with them having to fly into the wind whether coming or going to the roost.

You're right Tx Geese, we converted many duck and goose hunters to full time sandhill addicts. Still have a few weekends open, and several week days.

Will the season run through December?

I talked with Zach on Monday 12/6 about his last minute opening for 12/11 and all sounded great so I found a buddy and we committed to heading to Lubbock for a Saturday hunt. We got to the area Friday 12/10 about noon and drove around and saw tons of cranes, geese, and ducks. We tossed one of my pointers out in a public field and looked for pheasant, but the grass is very tall and very dry so after an hour with no luck we decided that wasn't gonna work. We did end up seeing some pheasant in a few ditches as we drove around checking out the area. Saturday morning 12/11 we met Zach and one of his guides Rick and headed out to a cut corn field and setup for the morning hunt. We had thousands of cranes and hundreds of geese in the area and he had times when you couldn't hear the guy next to you because the cranes where making so much noise. It was very cool to watch the birds work. We had bluebird conditions with a light to medium wind so the birds where moving all morning. We hunted over about 20 stuffers from layout blinds and had a blast. Thanks Zach and Rick!
