Im debating on late September or Early October. I cant decide I think Septemer will be too early still, but I dont want to do it to late either. confused2 Im worried we may not get too many rains at our place in september.

Also if I broadcast the seed should i disc it back into the soil or use a drag? popcorn

Where are you planting in the state? Down in south Texas most people plant wheat for grazing and harvest in Oct. to Nov. I have broadcast and disc it in also and it will work. You need to cover it or the doves will eat it up as fast as they find it up. You might call Turner Seed Co. in Breckenridge for a plant date in North Central and North Texas.

I will be planting just east of Ballinger. I dont really have access to any thing to drag after we plant so thats why Im wondering if discing the seed in will be ok.

Use a fence post, piece of pipe, an old gate, chainlink or a cattle panel are things that I have used. Discing is better than leaving it on the surface though if you can not do anything else. Better yet, disc and drag at the same time if you can.

One other thing to consider is Army Worms, I have a friend in Brady that told me they were really bad in Oct. last year. So you might check with the locals to see if there has been any of them around when you are ready to plant. They love young growth small grains and will wipe you out. I have had it happen to me twice in the last 5 yrs.

I would get the ground ready to go by mid Sept and the first good scheduled ran that came in, throw some seed. We waited till mid Oct. last year and never got any rain until after deer season. In Feb we started getting some rain and the wheat was about a foot tall by March. This was outside of Bronte.

Living here in santo, we are so dry right now as many others are. We are going to wait till we get a good rain in Oct. Broadcasting and dragging a hare works for us. Army worms are a factor as getting a little shower once getting a stand then turning off dry again watching it burn up. Its just a educated guess, its not perfect every year. Good luck farming.

If you have as many grasshoppers as I have, you better wait till end of Sept. I've made the mistake of planting my 40 acre field a couple of times to early when it was like this and by deer season I only had about 10 acres left in the middle of the field.

Out fields are usually disced and ready to go by mid to late September, and they get drilled as soon as there is some moisture to help them grow.

One thing I did not add is I chisel about 1300 acres up the first week in July. In the fall I run a disk, broadcast( seed and fertilizer ), and then hare. I really believe in opening up the ground an letting her set till fall.
