What is involved (how difficult) in the changing of ball joints in my 2001 4x4 Chevy 2500 HD? I was told today by the quick change guy that my rubber gromets were dry rotted and not holding grease. He recommended changing them. Can some of you more mechanically inclined folks give the the quick and dirty low down on how that is done and how difficult it is. I sometimes change my own oil and replaced the shocks on this truck last year. I also changed out the spark plugs and wires and changed the fuel filter and rotated the tires. That is about the extent of my mechanical experience. Can I handle ball joints, or should I leave this to an experienced mechanic?? thanks

My 2 cents, you might be better off grabbing your checkbook and kissing some of your the money good by.

You can handle it....If I'm not mistaken the ball joint comes with a new upper control arm for this truck. Jack your truck up. Put it on jackstands. Take the wheel off. Put the jack under your lower control arm. Then unbolt the upper control arm from the frame and the spindle. Bolt the new upper control arm to the frame and the spindle. You may have some rivets holding the lower control arm to the ball joint. If so, you will have to chisel these out. Unbolt the lower control arm from the spindle and chisel the rivets out. Then install the new ball joint and reassemble. Do the same to the other side.

Couple things to watch out for. If you don't support the lower control arm, the springs have enough tension to pop it out of place. Also, don't unbolt the upper and lower from the spindle at the same time. Always have one connected. Just makes it a lot easier. If you any questions, shoot me a PM. I'll do my best to help you out. cheers

I agree with dogcatcher on this one, crack open the checkbook and let someone else do it. It's not all that hard if you've done one before or have someone to instruct you step by step, but not knowing where to hit or where to support with the jack can get you in trouble.

BTW... just because the boots are cracked doesn't mean the joints are bad. They may last a long time, particularly if they get greased regularly with your oil changes. (the quick lube jockeys are probably the ones that blew out the boots in the first place)

Also, it's usually the lower joints that go bad first since they support all the weight. You can't just unbolt them and replace the whole a-frame like you can with some upper ball joints. Again you need to know where to hit 'em to break the spindle loose, and where/how to support the a-frame to pound the old joints out. A ball joint press also helps install the new ones.

So, don't worry about it until you need them. Whenever you have the truck jacked up (from the frame, suspension hanging down), place a prybar under the tires and have someone lift up. When you can see up and down slack in the lower joint, that's the time to have them all replaced.

that one should have the torsion bar set up.....not too hard to do, but its better to have someone who knows what to do, and the right tools to do it...

Grab a book and jump in there. Don't let these guys scare you. I had never done them before when I did them on my Dad's truck. Took about four hours from the time I parked the truck till I drove away. And that was taking my time. If you can change your spark plugs without cross threading them, you can do the ball joints.

That does have the torsion bar setup, but that torsion bar is basically just a different shaped spring. Still gotta be careful with it.

A LOT easier on these newer trucks as they are not pressed in.
You can drill the rivets out of the lower then bolt the new ones in.
If you have done brakes before you can handle this job and save you some money. Upper and lower ball joints I think would be upwards of the 6-$1000 mark.

Blasphemy! It ain't that difficult. I have a 88 1 ton with Humvee tires, it chews ball joints. It's about an hour job for uppers a little more for upper and lowers. Watch the CV half shaft as it will try to slip out, but if it does just rotate till the splines mesh. If you have the orginals on there you may have to grind the rivets off, new ones have replacement bolts. I cannot stress this next point enough. Go to Orielly's, or Napa, or anywhere except Vato Zone and buy the most expensive ones they have, Moog at Oriellys, lifetime replacemnet with pretty much no questions asked. If you need help pm me, I am getting to be an expert. You may need a ball joint press or "tuning" fork but they will loan it to you for free. Good luck!
