Sunday night I ran across my first encounter with a tick and bug infested dead pig that we had shot. I guess I've been lucky up to now in that the pigs I skinned and quartered were only dirty but not tick/bug infested. what do you do in those cases to rid the bugs? or do you just skin the pig really fast and wash yourself? I was thinking that there has to be some sort of "pig wash" that won't poison me to do the trick- one old guy said he took a propane torch and burnt the hair off the hog prior to skinning but I don't know if he was pulling my leg.

I have heard of people tying the hog with a chain or rope to your back bumper and dragging it down a dusty road to remove fleas.

Leave it and go to next. It's not like there's a shortage.

What do you do when you kill a deer that is covered with ticks??? I killed a buck last year that 20 minutes after he was dropped you could see ticks leaving him by the hundreds. I had to spray the back of my truck after I got him home.

Part of my deal with the rancher is that I have to take it with me- their place isn't set up to let it sit in the sun for the vultures and coyotes. I'd like to butcher a bunch of pork for sausages and stuff so I'm interested in how to get to the meet.

I think the propane torch idea would work, with a big tip. I've used them to kill fire ants in telephone pedestals before. Just keep moving it around so you don't directly burn the hide, and all the bugs will just "pop". Try it out and give us a report back.

I too noticed ticks and a few bugs on my last kills. What I do is brfore I gut them I spray them off with cold water for about 15-20 minutes and use a stiff wire brush, you can actually see them run off. Then I spray the area down real good and get the knives going.

Also, I have shower facilities at the ranch, and go wash off using some lice shampoo I keep on hand. Works great, but I don't over-use it.

Hey Scoop- I'm not familiar with a pear burner- does that go on a propane torch or are you talking about a rosebud head that oxy/acetylene torches use?

I used the small MAPP gas bottles/hoses on the fire ants. I don't know what a pear burner is either.

a pear burner has a hose that hooks to your regular propane bottle, like the bottle on your gas grill. it has a pipe about three feet long with an end that is a cylinder about the size of a one pound coffe can. Funny, I'd not heard of this method before last weekend, and now this is the second time since then.
I know that when I used to trap a lot and I'd catch a coyote full of fleas i'd throw him in a trash bag and spray the heck out of it with lysol. Also there is a flea/tick killer that comes in a blue bottle with a red and white spray top that works good. I think it is called anderson's

try one of the farm supply stores. the pear burner burns the stickers off the prickly pears and the cows will eat them. we hunted on a place that had no grass in a dry year and the owner was burning them and the cows would eat what he burnt.

Sounds like the pear burner questions have been answered. You can also use it on wet/damp days to get the camp fire going. I know Tractor Supply carries them as well as the places others have mentioned.

I also heard a power washer does a great jog if you have one, and water ect...
Myself I just skin them out as fast as I can... I'll probably end up with a tick disease some day...
