Been reloading some rather tame, trapdoor loads from the book, .45-70 loads for my Marlin. After a little research I've found that 40,000psi is safe for my particular model. Do I really gain that much in the trajectory and or energy department to make this worthwhile?

Also I have heard that the .45-70 chambered rifles will also fire a 4-10 shot-shell without damaging the rifling. Anybody know for sure?

It will shoot the 410, but not with any degree of accuracy. The rifling will make the pattern a donut with a huge hole in the center. 10-15' is about max range. You'll also have to single shot them. The only real difference in trajectory, in my opinion, is from Hornady's LeverRevolution ammo. It will make a large difference. Hot handloads will make a big difference in energy but the trapdoor loads will pass thru almost all game in North America like they are. If you are recoil sensitive at all, you won't like the hot loads. They are brutal. Check out this article by Paco Kelly. It's got a lot of good info and when you're done check out the rest of the Leverguns website. There is a ton of info and some really good stories. Have fun with this grand old cartridge. It's as much fun today as it was 130+ years ago. There is just something about throwing a huge chunk of lead that appeals to me.
