A while back I asked about taking out computer to Best buy to have it geek squaded, aka take the viruses out. I can't seem to kick the ones I had. Someone suggested I skip the payment to them and do it myself, by defragmenting?? Could someone chime in on how I can do this please??

On your start menu[lower left hand screen] go to all programs to accessories to system tools to disc defragmenter.
two choices analyze and defrag.

Very careful, hold it real tight, do not let the handle fly off. Find the pin with the finger ring, when you find it slip it in the hole to keep the handle from popping off. Never mind go out in the back yard and throw it over the fence into your neighbors yard and hit the deck!!!
If you have Vista go to the left lower corner and click on the round icon. Go to help and support, in search type in "defrag" it will tell you what to do.

Defragmenting does not get rid of viruses, all it does is "organize" your hard drive. You need a virus scanning program. I use the Trend brand, which is one of the best IMO. Been using it for 2 years now and not one single virus.
You also need to run your "Disk Cleanup" program in addition to the defrag. I run mine about 1-2 times a week.

You can get some cheap and even free virus scanning program, but IMO they are not very good.

My neighbor has several that howl at the fence all the time, I seasoned up some raw chicken out on the workbench for a couple of days. When it was ripe they got some doggie treats. The barking has recently stopped. Also noticed Dalworth Carpet cleaning in their driveway 2 days later.

Defragmenting needs to be done from time to time. It allows your computer to run more efficiently.

So defragmenting won't help me any??? then I won't do it, and thanks again guys The defragmenting will not remove the viruses, but it does need to be done. When files are added to your hard drive, sometimes they become fragmented, meaning they are split up. The de-fragmenting finds those files and puts them back together and makes it easier on your computer to run. The disk cleanup takes unnessicary files and folders and removes them, freeing up disk space. Its a good idea to do the disk cleanup before doing the de-freagmenting.

I defrag mine at least once a week, and it runs smooth as silk.

If I am going to defrag, I will usually run a disk clean-up first. i also perform a defrag at least monthly. Some other things to consider:
AVG- free AV software. CCleaner- Free, fixes alot if not all registry errors (there will be registry clutter) and can help the pc run better.

No, that would be fragmenting. Refer to dogcather's first post.
