Greetings,

I have a question about the proper ammunition for an older model Remington 721 .300 H & H mag. I have read that there is a difference between the .300 weatherby and winchester rounds and wonder which one this is chambered for? I don't get over here often as I am usually hanging out on the TFF but would appreciate any advice.

Thanks guys...

Weatherby rounds can not be fired in anything other than a Weatherby Magnum rifle as far as I know. I'm sure someone else will chime in shortly.

.300 H&H mag is niether a 300 Whetherby nor a .300 Win Mag. The .300 H&H mag is a great caliber but is not popular enough to be found at most chain stores, check an actual gun store or a larger store like Bass Pro or Cabelas and you will find the H&H mag.
The Weatherby rounds are based off of the 300 H&H case where they change the shoulder to a double radius taper. They are in no way interchageable.

IIRC both Winchester and Remington have stopped making ammo for the 300 H&H. It's a grand old cartiidge, just not popular any longer.

You can still find ammo on the hunting supply websites like Midwayusa, but it will be expensive.

As noted, you CANNOT use ammo for other 300 magnums in the 300 H&H.

Deal with the ammo problem. They have been re-inventing the 300 Holland & Holland Magnum for decades and it will still hang with all the others. Great round! The 721 is as strong as any 700. The extractor is the only real improvement on the 700.

721's in 300 H&H are hard to find most have been rechambered to 300 Weatherby which lessens the value but is an improvment over the slower 300 H&H. Were this my rifle I would leave it as is and deal with the ammo price and problem, they feed like a dream and really benifit from hand loading. You have one of the old classic's enjoy!

Thanks again. I scoured the last gun show and only found two boxes of Federal which I paid dearly for. Ouch! This one will definitely not be used for casual shooting...

Winchester still loads 300H&H I think they even have Balistic silver tips.

If i were you id load my own after you finish shooting those 2 boxes make sure and keep the brass.

and if you dont reload....you can always sell the brass on gunbroker.com or on here and make back some of your costs.

This is a magnificent rifle and caliber. The gun press and manufacturers have been trying to improve it for 85 years with some success (but not much).3300fps with 150 grain bullet (mild load) is a piece of cake! Order up some ammo and lay in to learning how to skin and process.

Where did you find any? I can't find any reference to the 300H&H on Winchester ammo's website.

I finally made the trip to Cabelas and found it in stock. Definitely feel better knowing that it is still on the shelf even if it is pricey. They only had Federal though...no Winchester in sight.
