Hey guys,
I want to get my first deer rifle for Christmas this year, and I've decided on a Remington 700 in .30-06. First off, is this a good choice? My second question is, should I get the Model 700 ADL or Model 700 SPS? The SPS is usually about $75 more than the ADL. Is the SPS worth the extra cash? What are the differences? Also, I'm probably going to get a Simmons 6-18x50 scope, because I can afford it and I've heard they are pretty good. Any thoughts on that?
Thanks fellas.

I would get the sps, it has the drop plate on the bottom it makes it easier unloading it. As for the scope i would suggest a lower power scope like a 3-9x40.

Yeah I wouldn't get the 18 power unless it is on a more higher quality scope.

Why should I get a lower powered scope? I probably won't ever zoom into x20, I just think it'd be nice to have for scouting or checking targets or things like that.

Because cheap high powered scopes look like crap at 18 power and might not have same point of impact when cranked up. Get some binoculars for scouting. Shouldn't point your gun at anything you don't intend to shoot.

Less light and not as much field of view, the 50mm will set up higher on the rifle and make the bullets path and the line of sight be farther apart also.

Would the scope be fine if I kept it say under x15 magnification? The primary reason I'm looking at this scope is because of price, and my friend has a few and he says they are decent.
Does anyone else have anything to say regarding SPS vs. ADL?

I would pick the SPS.
If you like that scope go for it. I don't know how much it is but you can get a 3-9x40 Nikon Prostaff for pretty cheap and have a really nice setup.

Is 3-9 enough? The Nikon you mentioned is about $50 more than the Simmons. Is it worth it?

It is worth it to me. It may not be for you. 3-9 is plenty.

Well, how much better quality are Nikon scopes over Simmons scopes?

In any brand scope, the higher magnification you go, the higher the price. If the 18x Simmons is $50 less than the 9x Nikon, that tells you something right there, IMO.

That's very true, thanks. I think I'll take the Nikon.
Should I get the 40mm or 50mm objective lense version? What are the differences, besides the obvious size difference.

Thanks fellas. I'de choose the SPS, not sure why, but I like mine over the adl(s) I have. Could probably do better on the scope, but I have had one (Simmons 6-18x50 ProSport?/can't remember which model) on an abolt SS 300wm for the last 7 yrs and it is a tack driver. It very seldom comes off 18x.

I just bought a 700 SPS in 30.06 and I love it. Mine has a Burris timberline 3-9x32 and it is very accurate. Good luck on that first buck.

Thats a nice thing to do BOBO. I have 2 Burris FF IIs with BP and have had good luck with both. Better than both of the scopes mentioned in this thread IMO.

Definitely a better scope than what has been mentioned. I only mention the prostaff because of the price.

Burris is a far better choice. I have 2 and love them. Wont buy another Leupold or Nikon after using the Burris. BoBo is the man!!!!!!
