So when is it that yall pursue getting those trophy bucks? Does rut time matter at all? Age matter at all? The ability to spread their genetics etc etc?

His genetics have already been spread in seasons past, so it doesn't really matter!IMO

well fish, remember that in previous seasons he might not have been such a dominant buck since he was younger, and only bred with a few does.....

but id be willing to bet that as far as low fence ranches go, the biggest bucks get taken opening weekend.

more than likely that is very true. but if the hunters out at our ranch take a huge buck open weekend or before the rut that is less than 6.5 then they better be prepared for one hell of a verbal tearing apart.

Most breeding is done by younger bucks.

I might agree with this, but I believe most early breeding of does is done by mature bucks. I believe most of the time the mature bucks are the ones breeding the first does that come in. Once a majority of the does come in, whichever buck mature or immature is closest and gets to her first does the breeding. Since there are a lot more immature bucks than there are mature bucks, they do a majority of the breeding.

Shoot your largest bucks at 7 1/2 before the rut to ensure antlers aren't broken up...

I would say if your are really anal about letting all your big bucks walk for management purposes, then more power to you, but the majority of the people who hunt will take a personal trophy no matter what time of the season it is when the opportunity is presented.

Most really big bucks don't show up until the rut, and that is when I try to spend most of my time hunting for that reason.

Later in the season, during the post rut is also good when the bucks are beat down, and the hunting pressure is off, and the big bucks are trying to look for food to survive.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

x2 on all 3 points.

There are studies out that say 2 1/2 -3 1/2 year olds breed more doe per year than the older bucks. If you are talking about a true throphy then we should be talking about at least a 5 1/2 by then he hopefully has done plenty of breeding.

Sure would like to find some links that back up the research that most immature deer do the breeding. Don't have any documentation but I have always been under the impression it was opposite.

Be back in the morning with information or a changed opinion.

I just like to hunt and when does not make any difference to me. I like to see the buck on camera or in person (before the season) and hunt that one buck the rest of the year. If a bigger one shows, I have been known to fine tune my focus and take a different buck, but I just enjoy being out there in the field. I will be there pre-rut, rut, post-rut and any time they have a season. The more opportunities, the better the chance of killing a big deer.

yea guys, where is this documentation? only thing ive ever witnessed is the big bucks running off the younger bucks and doing the breeding they want instead of the youngins.

Seriously???? Most of us don't have the luxury of letting mature, trophy deer walk and expect to ever get a chance at him again.

Way I figured it is there are more immature bucks than mature bucks by a large number. Say the ratio of mature bucks to immature is 10 immatures for every 1 mature buck. If there are plenty of does, 10 immature bucks are going to outbreed 1 mature buck in my way of thinking. If you are at an ideal ratio of 1 doe to 1 buck, a mature buck would stand a better chance, but I think even in this situation the 10 immature bucks still outbreed the 1 mature buck. I just believe that a mature buck cannot be everwhere covering every doe. Am I wrong?
