I have a Tikka T3 270 MSM, that my son would like to start hunting with. I am looking to put a muzzle brake on it. Does anybody have any advice, success/horror stories about the process and/or a particular muzzle brake.

I have heard about a "BP-tec VA comp" does anyone have any experience with these.

Any info would be appreciated.

If u r near the DFW area contact Rays Sporting Goods/Rays Guns. Very helpful people and great quality work. They have muzzle breaks to fit every gun and price range. I have one on my 270 and love it! Tends to make the gun very loud, only drawback I have found but it won't stop me from putting another one on any of my guns.

I had one on a 270 that I traded for and sold the rifle later. It was a Vais Brake and very effective. I sold the rifle since I really didnt like the extra noise. For me a non-braked 270 is still mild on the recoil scale. For a youngster it might make the rifle more appealing to shoot so long as they dont let the noise intimidate them.

Get low recoil bullets. Muzzle brake is too loud.

I agree. Bought a 270 with a muzzle break years ago. Incredibly loud. Nightmare to shoot if you're in a box blind. Bought my 10 y/o son a Thompson G-2 with a 223 barrel. Can buy a 243, 270, etc barrel as he get older. Has worked great. Very accurate.

Catchin, Is the 270 a Win. 270 or a 270 Win. Short Mag? If it is a Win 270 simply buy the Rem. Managed recoil loads for it till the boy grows up. If it is a WSM I am mot aware of any reduced recoil loads for it, maybe someone else does. I am not a fan of brakes at all. If gun needs a brake I need a different gun. Noise from a gun with a brake is deafening, literally. If someone is sitting with him in a box blind, they will feel the concusion from the brake and without hearing protection will be deaf for a short while with possible damage forever.

I've been reading about the "managed recoil" rounds, and you might give that a try first - I've read though, that you don't really want to shoot them much past 100-150 yds, but I have no experience with them.

It's a WSM. I've been reading about the BP-tec VA compensators. They supposedly do not increase the sound and take out 35-40% of the kick. They are $190.00 for just the blank muzzle brake. I can swallow the price if I knew the really worked.

My son would rather have the kick than the extra loud bang.

A little OT, but I'd buy the boy some of these Howard Leight Impact Sport Muffs ($59.99 at Cabelas) to hunt in and use at the range. You don't want him to have the kind of hearing a lot of us old timers have when he gets to be our age. I wish they'd been around when I was a kid.

maybe its just me, but i've been with quite a few hunters who had muzzle brakes and they are louder, but not what ya'll are making it out to be.

imo, if noise dosen't bother you, a brake is an effective tool, although unecessary on a .270. I would't have any rifle bigger than a .300 win mag that did'nt have a brake on it

If your son would rather have the kick than the noise then ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY, DO NOT PUT A MUZZLE BRAKE on that gun!!!!!!!!!!

I don't care who makes them, and I've shot a few with different brands, they are LOUD! I personally don't like muzzle brakes.

If your already thinking about spending 190 bucks, why not just buy him a Marlin XL-7 in 243 or 7-08 for less than $300 and he'll have his own gun? Cabela's just had them on sale for $279. From what I hear they are real good guns for the money.

BTW I personally think its more the noise of a gun that makes a person flinch than it is the kick.

I agree - unless you're shooting all day, the recoil shouldn't be all that bad unless the gun doesn't fit properly.

At the range on a crowded day, though, I flinch every single time the people next to me shoot - can't help it.

If a 270 kicks so much that I even consider putting a muzzle brake on it, that's the day I sell out and move to Florida with all the other old folk's and take up shuffleboard. There’s not a gun out there that I would even remotely consider putting a muzzle break on.

Try reading the thread,

He said its a WSM which does kick alot for a young kid, he's not considering it because of his needs.

Break or no break, protect your ears. I have bad Tinnitus, (ringing ears) 24/7/365, and according to the ear specialist, just add forever to the 24/7/365.

I got it from unprotected ears and shooting. Whether you realize it or not even a 22 LR is loud enough to do permanent damage.

Thanks guys. My son is reading these posts and says he'll grow into the kick. He wants to go shooting tomorrow.

Thinks for the ear protection advice. I think when we hunt in a blind we'll hunt with ear protection.

I'm still curious about the bp-tec "va comp" muzzle brake.

One reason I recommended the sound-enhancing muffs is because you can wear them ANYTIME you're shooting, since they don't prevent you from hearing (and actually enhance). I wouldn't allow him to fire ANY firearm without them on, ANYPLACE. But that's just me.

lots of people dont like brakes but they work as well as alot of hunters dont use ear pro for "just one shot". figure out if you going to require your son to always use ear pro or not the get that brake.

i dont like the little holes ported brakes, old school and not super effective. i like the jp enterprises tank brake.

I vote for the managed recoil loads. It will tame the recoil of the 270 and as he gets older he can use standard rounds.

Ugh...I have it too. it drives me bananas. I don't know if you (or ya'll) know, but caffine makes the ringing louder.

As for the brake, I really like brakes. I don't think a .270 really needs one, as many have stated, you can back off on the round. Any brake does make the gun louder, but IMO any large caliber is loud, brake or not. I simply make sure I have good ear plugs in at all times. For those of us with kick anxiety, the brake is a good solution. I feel like the reduction in kick makes a large caliber managable and provides a little more confidence in my shot.

This 270 is a short Magnum. Even the guy who sited in my rifle said "This kicks like a mule."

We went firing today and after about 5 rounds my son was learning how to relax and go with the kick. His next 7 rounds were grouped within 6 inches, with 3 in the bulleyes range.

He loves the rifle.
