My 5 year old Remi took a double strike by a water snake Monday. I cleaned the wounds well and have been applying antisepic ointment to each (4) and have been keeping her eye flushed with a medicated visine-type wash. Started giving her 250 mg of amoxacylin 2X/day on Weds morning because the area around the eye was reddening and the swelling wasn't reducing. The only good news was there wasn't any discoloration in the eye or discharge from it. Also started her om 3 25 mg Benadryl 2X/day. Following yesterday mornings hunt it was obvious that my home treatment wasn't responding properly so off to the vet we went.

Doc congratulated me for a good job of diagnosis and correct treatment. Of course, he scolded me for waiting 3 days to bring her in. He said if it was warmer weather he could also attribute the 4 entry marks to wasp stings. Even a large spider can cause that reaction he said but the bite marks were too large. We've seen 3 diamond back water snakes around that particular blind the spring and summer. They are nasty bastages IMO and I kill everyone I get a chance at. I will redouble my efforts now.

By the way ... it's still slower than molasses at our place and we managed to scratch out only a single Gadwall yesterday morning. Here's young "Emma" on the way back with a mouthful of deliciousness! ...

Sounds like a Cottonmouth bite. Look what they can do to dawg flesh ... even with prompt medical treatment ...

Here's another view of our wetlands and an early morning retrieve. She marked the fall well and has a lock on the dead bird another 15 yards from her ...

Sorry to hear Remi took a hit. As far as the ducks go, just hoping for a major turn around in the next split.

Cappy,

With having the wetlands means alot of snakes. We have seen alot in the summer and spring up at Pintail Farms. I did not use my dog much during early teal season because of the snakes we have seen. Hopefully it will get cold quick and they will be done for the year. I hope you dog recovers quick.

My lab got bite by a copperhead right on the nose. Got him to the vet very quickly. Lots of swelling, but no after affects. Good luck with your lab, sorry to hear of the bite. It sure has been a bad year for those things!

Yeah I hope she gets well soon.

Makes me think twice about what I do. My little woodie pond is a bonafide snake pit, it's covered in cottonmouths all summer long and I've been wading all around in it.

Yes, both have been through snake breaking. But ask the vet who's treated snake bit dawgs who were "snake proofed" ... it only helps if they SEE or HEAR a rattler. It's the most commonly used snake for "breaking". Almost every other dawg that's bit is struck on the legs or belly when they blunder into one, or are in the other group like my Remi that got struck in the face when they went to investigate a "different scent" in a confined space.

The fact that she had multiple wounds tells me that she got "pissed" when hit and decided to even the score. She soon learned that was not a good choice. scared

My dog was snake proofed with a rattler and won't get near any snake. Either way it sucks to be bit no matter what it is.

Those water snakes are notorious for makeing multiple bite wounds, and being very agressive.

My pup took a snake bit last week also. Went right to the vet. She got hit on her front paw. Lots of meds and she is doing great.

Y'all got me worried! I never had an issue back in AR, don't know if my 6 year old has ever even seen a snake.
