With all the posts and hoopla ads I see and hear only confuses me more, A million answers and not one simple solution... UGH.. I have recently aquired an older solid seeming 30-06, and live several dozen miles from civilization but will bare the trip next weekend with the wife for turkey dinner with her family and thought, HMMMMMMMM, Im onna stock up on ammo while in the big "D"... I havent sighted my 30-06 in and need to know, why does some guns shoot different ammo better than others??? I got one shot to buy some bulk discount ammo and want SERIOUS advice on grain bullets??? If possible I would like to pick and stick...What would you buy and why??? Is that just wishful thinking or does it require trial and error???? HELP....

Trial and error basically. But honestly any quality factory ammo should be accurate enough to hunt with under normal Texas conditions, especially in east Tx.

Just be careful with bulk ammo, most of it is not hunting ammo.

Go to wal mart or Academy and buy some 150gr Winchester power Points or 150gr Remington Core Lokts. Unless you shoot at unusually long ranges, either will be accurate enough to do the job, and either will be amoung the cheaper ammo available.

X2 I believe the Remington Core Lokt 150gr bullets shoot as accurate as any hunter needs

There isn't a stock answer. Every gun shoots differently as each is made up of components that fit together with different tolerances, barrel dimensions and chamber dimensions differ minutely, etc.. As stated, any reputable manufacturers ammunition will work well, just don't expect the best accuracy without doing some experimenting.

Not a fan of the Core Lokt for putting deer on the ground. They tend to run for awhile with that brand. Great range round 150grain for 30-06, JMO. Winchester Supreme with the silver ballistic tip seems to drop em where they stand, again JMO. Also like hornady ballistic tip. Ballistic tip being the key words here. JMO.

And IMO the winchester ballistic silvertips where the worst round I ever shot at deer. Did great on the range, but almost lost all buy one deer I shot with them. All but one ran a long ways, and none had any blood trail. Now the old silvertips are deadly, only had one out of about 15 run any distance. And the hornady SST's deadly DRT.

I would bet that 150 grain Corelokt in 30-06 has killed more deer in texas than alot of the rest put together. Not saying their the best but they will get it done especially at East Texas ranges. Sometimes we overthink it (me included)

Sometimes we overthink it (me included) x2 and if you cant kill deer cleanly with it then you need more range time.

You could be setting yourself up for a big money mistake.
My 30-06 loves Sierras but yours might give you minute of barndoor accuracy. See what i'm getting at. You're better off experimenting.
I never get it when people post threads about the best ammo. The only response should be "whichever shoots best out of your rifle" because no two guns are alike.

If core lokts are accurate in your rifle, they are great killers. The 150gr 30 cal is a whitetail killing machine.

I have a 700 that likes the 165gr better than the 150's and a Ruger that prefers the 150's. I've never been able to tell much difference in the brand of ammo (unless moly coated) just in the bullet weight.
Grab you a mid-price range box of 150s and 165s and go from there.

i shot 150 core lokts for years untill the last buck i shot did not drop in his tracks. i have been looking at the winchester ballistic tip and nosler partition in 180 grain. i love the 30/06 and have never shot anything out of it that it didnt shot good. by the way it was a remington 700. i also have a thompson center pro hunter in 30/06.

My Browning A-Bolt will shoot good with just about anything I stuff in it, but it will shoot GREAT with 165gr Federal Premium NP. My Remington 710 is a tack driver with remmy core-lokt in shoulder pounding 220 grainers provided I don't flinch.

OK,, Here are my results... With much consideration and research following an adventure with a price tag, I have found the WINCHESTER BALLISTIC TIPS at 180 grain to be very consistant and deadly.... I tried MANY brands, loads, etc. and several were ok I just felt that the winchester ballistic tip 180 grain found a place in my heart with their tack driving ability at MANY distances.... The price is a bit higher than other readily available options but well worth the piece of mind .... I wish I had a bit more knowledge and understanding of ammo and ballistic application but I am just trying to learn what I can as I go.... Thank you all... and may GOD BLESS....

the rifleing is different on all rifles and thats why different ammo is required.I have never had nothing but good luck with shooting cor-loks in 30-30,.270,30.06,300savage.All drop on the dime hogs and deer.

I used CL's many years ago prior to loading for my 30-06. Once the Hornady Light Magnums came out I bought a box and found that the rifle loved them. Trial and error on the range is the best advise.

I am not certain, but I think that Hornady stopped making the light magnums. They replaced them with their new Superformance ammo. They are almost as hot, but not quite, but certainly not enough for me or you to tell the diff. But the Superformance's pressures are lower. I am going to look into them. Hornady has wonderful products, and the strictest of standards. They even load for Federal sometimes, and Federals standards are not as tight as Hornady's.
