We held our 9th annual teal hunt this past September near my home town of El Campo, Tx, when 11 disabled hunters come in for a weekend of duck hunting. Two of our guys, Mikey Sellers from Louisiana & Josh Wilhelm from Texas, were new injuries and it was their first time back in the field. We have approximately eight landowners and several volunteers who give up their time every year in order to guide our hunters and make sure they have good places to hunt that are wheelchair accessible.

(New member Mikey sits by a teal pond Saturday morning on his first hunt post injury)

Everyone converged on my dad's Texana Seed Co. in Garwood on Friday evening for a roast duck dinner, where hunters are paired with their guides and friendships are either made or rekindled. Sometimes, we even have to do some practice shooting or last minute work with some of the hunters who need additional "on-the-spot" adaptive equipment to get them ready for the hunts.

(My lab Tille is working hard on one of the hunts.)

Every morning, we head out in about five different directions so that every hunter gets some good action. Then we come back for breakfast & duck pickin' when it's all over. I can't tell you how much everybody looks forward to this special hunt every fall and how important it is to the hunters to be able to get out and do some things that make them feel 'back to normal' for at least a little while.

In two days, the group downed about 85 ducks in all and everyone saw good action. For some, just getting out was the most important accomplishment. They got to see that some things are still possible even after traumatic injuries. If you'd like to learn more, or find out how you can help, search for Serve Outdoors on my Follow Me Outdoors site.

Thanks to all who helped!
