i had one and used 3 pellets of pyrodex and a 250gr hornady bullet.

drop the pellets put the bullet in sabot-short start-long start and then push it down until it stops.

make sure you have the proper end attachement if you are using plastic tip bullets

Loading is fairly simple like was stated! However, for elk I prefer to use the Barnes Xpress 300 grain as it will give you greater expansion on entry. That gun will shoot over 200 yards, so practice at that distance.

PRACTICE is imperative, especially if he has never shot a muzzleloader before....they do shoot a little different!

Hey jdickey, did you get your elk this year? I like the barnes 300 gr as well. I have heard good things about the hornady FPB too. Like what jdickey said, it takes a lot of practice. Spend an hour or 2 at the range, and get the "perfect load".

what kind of powder? I like blackhorn 209 for loose, and pyrodex for pellets. Have been thinking about trying out the white hots pellets.

Triple 7 is what I've settled in on...use pellets mainly.

Didn't get drawn for elk this year, so went on a mule deer hunt at my cousin's ranch in New Mexico. Only had one shot....182 yards downhill....into the wind....and into the sun....and....shot over the sucker!

triple 7 is what I'm working on. Can't find the pellets for the .54 around here. Unless I missed them at Academy?

Heading out tomorrow to see how she does

Cabela's carries them. I know the academy here doesn't. Hodgon makes a .54 pellet in a 60gr. I wouldn't use any more then 2 pellets though. And be prepared when you clean it. It'll smell like rotten eggs. Depending on what kind of homemade solution/solvent you use.

Heading out to try it this morning.

Thanks for the info

Finally made it out to re-zero with the new powder. I like it!

80grs, inch or so high at 50yds, less than an inch low at 120yds, average 1.5 inch group.

Sweetness
