I'm going pheasant hunting in western KS near Larned this weekend for the opener. I have 2 questions:
1. Are there rattlesnakes in that part of Kansas? 2. Are they a problem this time of year (like they are in west tx)?
Just wondering how cautious to be. I would assume that they are less of an issue than TX because Kansas is usually colder by now. Looks like KS is having lows in the 30's-40's and highs in the 50'-60's.
Lived and hunted in Kansas for 35 years and never saw one while in the field, but killed several around the farm house I leased. I haven't seen one in the field in Texas either. I think your chances are lower this time of year in Kansas........
The season doesn't open till this Sat. Opening day forecast is 30 for the low and 50 for the high with snow showers for Sun with a high only in the 40's. Don't think snakes will be a problem. Been going up there for the last 7 yrs and never seen a snake.
FYI:: Tx panhandle report. Been killing rattle snakes about every week here. Temps 60 - 70 day, 30 -40 at night. The last one I killed was Mon. afternoon. He was moving slow out by a clients barn sunning himself. Be careful, they are still out.
We've seen one each of the last two openers SE of Oakley. But being about two weeks later, and cooler this year, I'm not expecting any this weekend. But, I ALWAYS keep an eye out for them.
Haven't seen any up there in my 10 or so years of going near Dodge. Saw a few in the OK panhandle in November sunning on warm days, but they were siting on top of their dens (old prairie dog holes). Were't venturing too far from home.
I saw one during pheasant season in my 10 years up there. He was sunning and so sluggish he couldnt have bit me if he tried. But, during dove and muzzleloader season I have seen dozens if not hundreds. Them dang prairie rattlers are mean little buggers.
