Hi, all. I'm considering hunting turkey for the first time this year. I was reading the thread about hunting with a rifle vs. hunting with a shotgun, and some guys said they would consider a rifle in the fall, but not the spring. What's different about the two that would make people think that?
You call turkeys 'into you' by immitating a hen in the spring since it is the mating season. In the fall they are in big herds and not really interesting in mating so don't normally respond to a call. Most are shot at a feeder in the fall. They still taste the same but the excitment is in the spring calling in a gobbler close to you. We shoot hens in the fall and good way to reduce the over population of them.
Gotcha. Thanks for getting back to me. Funny you mention the taste .. that's the biggest reason I want to do this. I'm dying to try some wild turkey (no, not THAT Wild Turkey). Any special preparation recommendations for it?
